Finland Finally Moving To Twitter | ArcticStartup

Take a look at what we talk about in Jaiku. The movement is back and forth. People are waiting for signals from Google.

Finland Finally Moving To Twitter | ArcticStartup: "There has been a dynamic and active Jaiku community in Finland even after the service got acquired by Google in October 2007. Google acquisition has many times meant a kiss of death to many startups. The Jaiku community strongly believed Jaiku would be an exception. At least until now it did.

Among the Finnish Jaiku community there was talk about migrating to Twitter, a US based micro-blogging site, already a while back when Jaiku was down but yesterday (Link in Finnish) I saw people abandoning the ship in bigger numbers than ever before.

Why I believe this might really be the kiss of death to the Finnish born Jaiku is because I just recently shifted my own usage to become Twitter heavy without knowing about the mass exodus here in Helsinki. This is not due to one service being superior to the other, but due to something as simple as the network effect I got to witness at LeWeb in Paris. So many of my friends outside of Finland are having conversations that are relevant to me in Twitter that I can not afford to not be there."

Finnish geeks say goodbye to their beloved Jaiku « TheNextWeb.com

Finnish geeks say goodbye to their beloved Jaiku « TheNextWeb.com: "Finnish geeks say goodbye to their beloved Jaiku | Ernst-Jan Written on December 15, 2008 – 2:18 pm

The story is writeen by Ernst-Jan Pfauth, editor in chief of The Next Web.

For everybody whose interested in the Northern European tech scene, Arctic Startup is a great source. Of course, we cover the basics, but Antti Vilpponen and his team don’t leave any details uncovered. Oh and yeah, most of the times we grab the highlights from their blog. Yep, guilty.

Like this one: Ville Vesterinen reports that the loyal Finnish Jaiku community slowly turns its back to the Google-owned microblogging service. He noticed a Jaiku discussion (in Finnish) where the symbolic rats jumped off the sinking ship.

Who can blame them? I hear from several sides that, just like Pownce, Jaiku had some issues which nobody resolves. Before you know it, my co-editor Zee is dancing on your grave because you didn’t listen to your users.

Vesterinen points out several painful issues: feeds aren’t coming through and the SMS service has been disabled for three days now (sounds familiar). But the major reason: you’re missing out on a whole lot of interesting conversations when ignoring Twitter."

Helge: Let's see what happens next. This is the beginning of something new. What? That remains to be seen. The group isn't united. We talk about a herd of individuals. Some of us won't move anywhere. Life continues like nothing has happened. That's the Finnish way of Life.

Ei hötkyillä!

How to Change the World: Looking for Mr. Goodtweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter

Twitter, Jaiku, Pownce, Friendfeed and Bloggy are good tools for building long distance relationships. That friendship can have practical implications, just as Mr. Kawasaki is writing in his blog posting. I know lots of business people on the Internet I've never met alive. Thousands read my blogs in Finnish, Swedish and English. From my location, Loviisa and or Sotkamo, it would never be possible to have a live communication with all the people I happen to know thanks to microblogs and ordinary blogs.

How to Change the World: Looking for Mr. Goodtweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter: "Looking for Mr. Goodtweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter."

At 10:15 pm I discovered that I had not brought a Macbook power supply on the trip. I was in a hotel on Coronado Island, and early the next morning I was flying to an aircraft carrier off San Diego for an overnight visit. I doubted that the carrier had Macbook power supplies laying around, so I was in trouble. I posted a message to Twitter that I was in this predicament, and within ten minutes, five people offered to bring me a power supply. I took one of them up on the offer, and he delivered it to me within an hour.

This illustrates the practical implications of a large following on Twitter. In addition, of course, there is the sheer vanity of amassing more followers than your friends. The question, “How do I get more followers on Twitter?” is unspoken because admitting that you want more followers is to acknowledge that you don’t have many. Thus, you probably don’t need this advice, but you may “have a friend” who will find it useful."

Twitter: Where's it @ for Business? - Media Bullseye

Helge: What are the advantages of Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce? Are they a total waste of time? Does Social Media and Networking bring some business benefits?

Twitter: Where's it @ for Business? - Media Bullseye: "However, many people are finding uses in Twitter that go beyond sharing messages, making friends and staying in touch. These people are doing business. I’m one of them. I’m in the communications business, but that does not automatically mean every communication tool I try, I need to spend my life on. Twitter is one tool among several that works for me, because the community is active and I have found hundreds of people with at least some relevance to my work.

Helge: I'm not a skeptic. Social Media opens new avenues and roads to people all over the world. I wouldn't spend a minute if there wouldn't be a benefit. It's not always obvious in the beginning, how to turn the contacts to euros and dollars. The first step is always an investment and the first return is learning.

What makes Twitter Work for Business?

A social network is its members. The platform dictates how you interact, but does not limit what you can accomplish. Twitter’s limits: 140 or fewer characters per message, stripped down functionality, feed into its strengths: ubiquity, and an easy source for quick responses. So how do the above people make Twitter a business asset?

Helge: Stripped down functionality. The same goes for Basecamp and we use it for global collaboration -- as an innovation platform. I guess, Ning could take over some of the Basecamp functions.

The first, obvious answer is that people at conferences have been able to connect with each other and more importantly, with those who cannot attend. More important to event organizers than the live-blogging conversational, community aspect of this (which I wrote about previously on Media Bullseye) is the promotional side. Attendees let people know the best of what’s going on, and spread that information beyond the previously self-imposed borders of the event."

Helge: I belong to "those who can not attend" in seminars all over the globe. The Twitter and Jaiku reports give me an on-site feeling of what is happening. This is important, it saves time, money and natural resources.

Channels 2007

2007 was a year of changes. The “channel strategy” has been in formulation and looks better than a year ago. But there is still some work to do.

I got into some new services like Twitter, Jaiku and Facebook emerging as interesting services to follow.

Twitter and Jaiku have really caught my attention delivering incredible value in discovering fresh and interesting comments, news and ideas.

Facebook has ended up as a cluttered and less important service. There is too much automation and gadgetry on FB. My Twitter and Jaiku use exploded.

Stats for Twitter

I expect to use it more in 2008 at least in partial replacement to some blog material. I should also mention Pownc as well. It’s not yet clear what I want to use it for. I’ve 168 contacts on Jaiku.

Mielikkala Mental Network Village

Anne Rongas Mental Network Village picture. You can Jaiku with her. I guess the idea is to build a village that cares. The social media is extended to real life. This is a re-engineering of a traditional Finnish village.

Facebook Applications for Amanda Lorenzani

What can we do when people have problems? Amanda is twittering and how can we respond? Do we have a solution to this problem?

Amanda Lorenzani AmandaLorenzani hey. geeks. invent an app that
updates facebook, twitter, pownce, jaiku, blogs, makes a coffee
and walks the dog before 9am please :-D Who is Amanda?

Helge: I guess, Amanda's problem could be solved by traditional means. She needs someone to do the work for her. We have people servicing cars, cleaning offices, maintaining our gardens, washing windows, making haircuts, etc. This leads to a very new expansion of the service industry.

Someone doing my facebooking...and Amanda's. Let me know the price and delivery time? Maybe that would give me a value indication of the work i put on socializing on the Internet. We have personal trainers. How about a personal blogger? The personal facebook-keeper has to be a part of our second life organization.

Marketing Roadmaps: Microblogging, Jaku and Twitter

Helge: I've been into microblogging since the spring of 2007. Started with Twitter and got involved with Jaiku a few weeks later. Jaiku is my Finnish English channel and Twitter is English only. I like to twitter and jaiku. It's a way to expand my global network. I follow people to learn things. Both are good for asking questions. They are great short form news channels.

Marketing Roadmaps: "To blog or microblog? Saturday morning, before I went into town to see Wicked, I had a little twitter-chat with Steven Streight 'Vaspers the Grate' (quotation marks not superfluous) about blogging versus microblogging using Twitter, Jaiku et al.

Personally, I seem to be back in a 'twitting' mode after a few months of just occasionally checking in. That, combined with the interchange with Vaspers got me thinking, again, about how blogging and microblogging fit in the total social media scheme, and especially how they both relate (or not) to marketing communications. Here's the back and forth over about a half hour before I had to leave for the play: go to the page..."

Helge: Vaspers is new to me. Need to take a look. Can these channels be used for marketing? Jaiku is often used as a short form event and seminars blogging platform. That's one practical application.
