How are we going to cope with the Buzz?

Time, not the sky, is the limit for people using social media. The new Google Buzz is trying cut into our daily life and attract us to spend more time Buzzing.
As a result, this means less time for Facebook, Twitter and many less populated social medias.
We still need some time to take care of our daily works and even traditional emails.
Time management is becoming an issue again. Mobile tools makes it possible to socialize while on the move, but there is still a limit to all of this.

Australia leads world in time spent socially online
Mike Bantick writes in his blog iTWire Sunday, 24 January 2010 that Facebook, Twitter and other social based internet systems saw massive increases in usage through 2009. Despite having some of the best weather for getting outside, Australians lead the world in spending time on social networks according to The Nielsen Company.
Helge: Let’s have a look what they are doing online. Need to call my brother Helmer in Sidney to learn how he thinks about the local online activities.
2009 was a big one for social networking online. The latest Nielsen Company numbers showed the continuing trend for social networks has not waned in the past two years.
Helge: We can see the same trend in Finland. The average person in street suggests “let’s get connected over Facebook". Twitter is still a little geeky.
Figures just released for December 2009 showed an increase of 82 percent in time spent in social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter over the previous year. On average in December 2008, social networkers spent just over three hours, this increased to more than five and a half hours in December 2009.
Helge: Do people have more time for online engagements and activities due to the global recession. Are we looking for new jobs, contacts and opportunities?
According to The Nielsen Company: Globally, social networks and blogs are the most popular online category when ranked by average time spent in December, followed by online games and instant messaging. With 206.9 million unique visitors, Facebook was the No. 1 global social networking destination in December 2009 and 67% of global social media users visited the site during the month. Time on site for Facebook has also been on the rise, with global users spending nearly six hours per month on the site.
Helge: I guess we are moving in the same direction. I don’t have comparable figures. Maybe they can be found through the reference information.
In the battle(!) to see which countries population spends the most time online socially, Australia topped the table with a average time per person of 6 hours 52 minutes and 28 seconds racked up during December 2009. Perhaps it is the tyranny of distance for a small population spread over such a vast geography that entices Australians to keep in touch online.
Helge: I figure that big countries with long distances between villages and people lead to increased online activity. USA and Canada are big as well. Finland has a small population in a large country.
By comparison US folks hit 6:09, the United Kingdom notched 6:07 and Italians came in fourth spending just over six hours Facebook’n, Twittering or Myspace’n at the end of last year.
Helge: We’ve national platforms as well so the figures aren’t comparable with English speaking countries.
Of the popular social networks, using US based data, The Nielsen Company charted the rise of both Facebook, and in particular Twitter over the past year: both Facebook and Twitter.com, outpaced the overall growth for the category, increasing 200% and 368%, respectively. Among, the top five U.S. social networking sites, Twitter.com continued its reign as the fastest-growing in December 2009 in terms of unique visitors, increasing 579% year-over-year, from 2.7 million unique visitors in December 2008 to 18.1 million in December 2009. However, month-over-month, unique visitors decreased 5%.
Helge: I guess both Twitter and Facebook are growing here as well. Qaiku is a better service for online collaboration but it’s still a local / national thing.

Twitter and LinkedIn Finally Sync Up | Small Business Marketing Blog from Duct Tape Marketing
Twitter and LinkedIn Finally Sync Up | Small Business Marketing Blog from Duct Tape Marketing: "Starting sometime today, LinkedIn users can automatically feed their Twitter status updates to their LinkedIn status updates. While LinkedIn’s status update feature is right there for all to use, my experience is that people don’t use it nearly as much as they should – or certainly not like Twitter. (Even though LinkedIn has more members than Twitter.) This should be a real shot in the arm to LinkedIn from an exposure standpoint, but it may shake things up a bit too as the volume of status updates skyrockets.
The partnership is significant for another reason. I think this update is a further move towards positioning Twitter as the central content distribution hub for business. Facebook Fan Pages now offer easy Twitter integration and Bing and Google have established official ties with Twitter as well.
The ability to cross post goes both ways.
On LinkedIn
You can post from LinkedIn status and have it update twitter or the other way around. On LinkedIn you will change some setting and then click the Twitter box to have a LinkedIn status update post to Twitter."

Twitter-Fever: Apple to buy Twitter? | TechFever Network | The Hot Tech News and Gadget Network: "According to U.S.Bloggers Michael Arrington of TechCrunch and Owen Thomas of ValleyWag, it seems Apple is just about to buy Twitter.com for $700 Mio in cash.
Last month Google tried to aquire the booming Micro-Blogging site - however Twitter founder and CEO Evan Williams rebuffed the internet search giant.
Previously, social networking site Facebook.com offered $500 Million for Twitter - but Williams also rejected the offer.
Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at WWDC in June,” qutes ValleyWag a “normally reliable source”"

The Art of Writing Great Twitter Headlines — Copyblogger

The Art of Writing Great Twitter Headlines — Copyblogger: "Twitter has become the place for sharing content links. If your content catches attention on Twitter and spreads, suddenly you’re getting significant traffic from people who may have never visited your site before.
But don’t forget to share other people’s quality content on Twitter. This helps you build up a Twitter audience that values your editorial judgment, which in turns helps you when you have something of your own to share.
In both cases, what you share on Twitter is not just about the actual value of the content. It’s also about whether the content gets viewed and appreciated in the first place.
Yep… the difference is in the headline. You’ve heard this before, right?"

The Amount And Value Of Twitter Traffic

Facebook has a new design and new microblogging functions. I guess Twitter, Jaiku, Qaiku and others will have a new challenge. Facebook might succeed to get over big junks of users. I learned about the posting below through FB.
The Amount And Value Of Twitter Traffic: "Much is being written today about the value of a large following on Twitter. Jason Calacanis wants to pay $125,000 a year to have Twitter recommend him to other users, for example. He thinks that over time accounts with massive followings will somehow be able to pull in $1 million a year or more in incremental revenue, assuming they then have millions of followers.
We have unique data to share because our TechCrunch Twitter account was made one of the suggested accounts on Twitter earlier this year. On February 11 we had 65,573 hard earned followers. By March 1 that had jumped to 158,708 followers. Today it stands at 217,187.
So in just over a month the number of Twitter followers to the TechCrunch account has nearly quadrupled. What I want to know is what kind of traffic that’s sending to TechCrunch, and what value that might have.
Our recent referral traffic from Twitter is shown in the chart below. This only includes traffic from Twitter directly, it doesn’t include third party clients or Twitter Search."

Twitter Traffic - The Foolproof Way to Use Twitter to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Twitter Traffic - The Foolproof Way to Use Twitter to Drive Traffic to Your Blog: "Twitter is a micro-blogging platform that has revolutionized the way folks communicate and share information online. Twitter has been around for a while, but until recently most folks labeled it overrated and useless for business. The truth is you can not only use Twitter to find friends and contacts, but also share information and drive thousands of folks to your blog everyday.
Twitter has been what all marketers and bloggers waiting for and more. But due to its nature, it drives away folks who try to deceive the community. The community of Twitter is intelligent and sophisticated, and they do not cherish folks who are out there only to make a few dollars on Twitter.
Bloggers have a lot to gain from Twitter. Twitter makes it easy to follow other super-bloggers and even get in touch with them. It’s not everyday that you get to directly talk to folks who have been in the business for years. You can also watch and learn a lot from super-bloggers on Twitter, something that was easily possible a few years ago."

Twitter Professors: 18 People to Follow for a Real Time Education
Twitter Professors: 18 People to Follow for a Real Time Education: "Twitter Professors: 18 People to Follow for a Real Time Education | February 16, 2009 - 4:33 pm PDT - Lon S. Cohen is a writer and social media strategist. He is @obilon on Twitter.
Helge: Need to check if I'm following him.
Never before in history has it been easier to glean from the knowledge of others who will give it away to you for free. It’s equivalent to getting higher education. I’m talking about Masters level stuff. And it’s all available right there on Twitter. I call the people I follow who contribute above and beyond the basic answer to “what are you doing?” my professors of Twitter.
Many of them don’t even know it and that’s the beauty. There is no course outline, no costly tuition (yet anyway), no declared major, and you can take as many electives as you want. There’s also no hard and fast list of required experience to be my personal Twitter Professor and tenure is non-existent. I do have very simple guidelines I keep in my head when designating my Twitter Professors:
1) RT really smart stuff from the people they follow saving me from sifting through even more of a stream of Tweets.
2) Have insightful Tweets in and of themselves (not just links).
3) Inspire me to engage in conversation with them or with others.
4) Write really great articles/blog posts on subjects I want to learn about or point to interesting articles I would never have read otherwise.
5) Expand my world experience through their stream of Tweets.
Usually, it’s a combination of many things and there is no way to quantify it, there’s no real formula and there’s no one particular Tweet that I can pull from to summarize their contributions. I just feel out the people I like to follow most.
In the blog you can find 18 people to follow for a real time education. The author asks you toe suggest your own Twitter professors in the comments.

Twitter a Status Symbol on the Web
InternetNews Realtime IT News - Pew: Twitter a Status Symbol on the Web: "February 13, 2009
By Kenneth Corbin: The microblogging phenomenon is inching a little closer to mainstream.
Researchers at the Pew Internet and American Life Project polled Internet users and found that 11 percent are using Twitter and similar short-form online message services or status updates.
Pew conducted a similar survey in May 2008, asking Internet users about their usage of Twitter and other microblogging services such as Yammer. The recent survey asked respondents if they used Twitter or any other online service that allowed them to update their status, a common feature on social networking sites.
'Facebook and its ilk are clearly playing a big part here,' Amanda Lenhart, a co-author of the report, told InternetNews.com.
The most recent survey, taken in December, found a sharp increase in uptake of Twitter-like services. In a similar study just the previous month, nine percent of Internet users said they were using online services to update their status. In the more targeted study in May, when Pew limited the focus to microblogging services, six percent answered in the affirmative.
Profiling the Twitter set, Pew found that they are prone to mobile computing, frequently dashing off status updates from their smartphones or laptops using a wireless connection.
Broken down by age group, the study's demographic findings follow a predictable line. Young people are far more likely to update their status online than older Internet users.
Roughly 20 percent of online adults between the ages of 18 and 34 said they use status-update services, compared with four percent of adults between the ages of 55 and 64, and just four percent of those 65 and older. "måndag 15 december 2008
Finnish geeks say goodbye to their beloved Jaiku « TheNextWeb.com
The story is writeen by Ernst-Jan Pfauth, editor in chief of The Next Web.
For everybody whose interested in the Northern European tech scene, Arctic Startup is a great source. Of course, we cover the basics, but Antti Vilpponen and his team don’t leave any details uncovered. Oh and yeah, most of the times we grab the highlights from their blog. Yep, guilty.
Like this one: Ville Vesterinen reports that the loyal Finnish Jaiku community slowly turns its back to the Google-owned microblogging service. He noticed a Jaiku discussion (in Finnish) where the symbolic rats jumped off the sinking ship.
Who can blame them? I hear from several sides that, just like Pownce, Jaiku had some issues which nobody resolves. Before you know it, my co-editor Zee is dancing on your grave because you didn’t listen to your users.
Vesterinen points out several painful issues: feeds aren’t coming through and the SMS service has been disabled for three days now (sounds familiar). But the major reason: you’re missing out on a whole lot of interesting conversations when ignoring Twitter."
Helge: Let's see what happens next. This is the beginning of something new. What? That remains to be seen. The group isn't united. We talk about a herd of individuals. Some of us won't move anywhere. Life continues like nothing has happened. That's the Finnish way of Life.
Ei hötkyillä!

Twitter comes of age with fast reports from the ground in Mumbai | World news | The Guardian
- There are a multitude of sources
- Twitter is very fast
- Mobile tools can be used for the reporting
- Flickr for photo sharing
- Wikipedia to collect scattered information
Twitter comes of age with fast reports from the ground in Mumbai | World news | The Guardian: "From the moment the first shots were fired, the internet provided a kaleidoscopic view of events in Mumbai. Using blogs and file-sharing sites, those caught up in the mayhem rapidly provided accounts from the ground as well as links to the best news reports appearing on the web.
One rich source of information was Twitter, which provides text-message-length updates. Its Mumbai thread provided a stream of snippets, not all accurate, from observers on the ground, with details of casualties, sieges, gunfights, and even the suspected names of terrorists.
Helge: In chaos no media is able to provide all accurate information. The reader has to filter the facts from a trend. There are also "several truths and myths" about a war like situation.
In many cases, Twitter updated developments faster than many TV networks or newspaper websites. The site's contributors also questioned the veracity of some news reports, pointing out contradictions and errors. When Indian reporters announced that the siege at the Taj hotel was over, for example, Twitter contended that gunfights were continuing. 'Locals say gunfire still happening at TAJ,' said one feed, hours after fighting was said to have finished. 'Twitter comes of age - Mumbai coverage way ahead of traditional media,' added another contributor."
Helge: The story continues to explain other Web 2.0 tools in use during the terrorist attack.
Guardian writes.
Vinukumar Ranganathan was one of the first to upload photos to the picture-sharing website Flickr. His and others' blurred images from the bloodied streets of Colaba instantly conveyed the gravity of the attacks. As soon as it emerged that the head of the antiterrorist squad, Hemant Karkare, had been killed, Flickr instantly contained a portfolio of images of the official.
By last night Wikipedia contained more than 4,000 words of detailed - and corrected - information on the attacks.

How to Change the World: Looking for Mr. Goodtweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter
How to Change the World: Looking for Mr. Goodtweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter: "Looking for Mr. Goodtweet: How to Pick Up Followers on Twitter."
At 10:15 pm I discovered that I had not brought a Macbook power supply on the trip. I was in a hotel on Coronado Island, and early the next morning I was flying to an aircraft carrier off San Diego for an overnight visit. I doubted that the carrier had Macbook power supplies laying around, so I was in trouble. I posted a message to Twitter that I was in this predicament, and within ten minutes, five people offered to bring me a power supply. I took one of them up on the offer, and he delivered it to me within an hour.
This illustrates the practical implications of a large following on Twitter. In addition, of course, there is the sheer vanity of amassing more followers than your friends. The question, “How do I get more followers on Twitter?” is unspoken because admitting that you want more followers is to acknowledge that you don’t have many. Thus, you probably don’t need this advice, but you may “have a friend” who will find it useful."

Independent Street : Why to Tweet on Twitter
Independent Street : Why to Tweet on Twitter: "You may have heard about Twitter – a free social-networking tool that lets users update friends, colleagues, acquaintances and others throughout the day. A small but enthusiastic number of business owners are embracing it. Why?
Helge: What makes me tweet?
First, some basics: The tool lets users write short messages from their computers or mobile phones. These “tweets,” are blasted to “followers” who’ve signed up to receive that person’s updates. Followers can read them on their own Twitter page or, in some cases, have them scroll across their Web browser.
Helge: I feel connected to a bigger crowd and learn from my friends and followers.
Many business owners might feel it’s more silly than useful. Yet, some users say they’re seeing a real benefit – mainly, that they get to have a continuous, real-time dialogue with customers. Businesses can inform customers about what they’re up to, ask questions to all their followers at once and get instant feedback. They can also monitor what others are saying about the business.
Helge: Continuous asynchronous dialog with people all around the globe.
Of course, Twitter isn’t for every business. It’s likely to be too time-consuming for the average busy entrepreneur. It also may not come across as the most professional way to interact with customers."
Helge: I know that many businesses could benefit but there is still a majority thinking that tweeting is a silly way to spend your working day. I don't agree.

About self confidence | How to Have Great Self Confidence
About self confidence | How to Have Great Self Confidence: "My name is David Rogers and I live on the south coast of England. Our eldest daughter is now 20, we have non identical twins who are 17. I used to work in a bank, amongst other things, but my main line of work has been Occupational Therapy. I have worked in various mental health settings (acute unit, rehabilitation, community, prison) for over 20 years. My wife is a nurse whose specialism is oncology. I have always been interested in personal development – particularly practical self help.
I have an eclectic collection of books which cover personal development – starting with Dale Carnegie at a time when I really had few friends! The books that have most influenced me are:-
- Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi,
- Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
- A Touch of Greatness by Frank Tibolt
- They F*** You Up by Oliver James
One of my favorite quotes is by Frankl, quoted in Flow:-
“Don’t aim at success - the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue…as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a courses greater than oneself.”

Jeanne Shaheen as Twitter Friend
Hi, Helge V. Keitel.
Jeanne Shaheen (JeanneShaheen) is now following your updates on Twitter.
Check out Jeanne Shaheen's profile here:

You may follow Jeanne Shaheen as well by clicking on the "follow" button.
Best,
She is campaigning to get to Washington. I should not be a part of her target group while I don't have the right to vote in US. I decided to post about Jenna while it tells about a new trend in politics. Politicians are looking for "friends" and "donations" over Internet. Twitter, Facebook and other Social Media platforms are attracting people who want your vote. The the same trend is beginning to show in Finland as well.
I know nothing about Jeanne Shaheen, but it is interesting to follow her progress.

Richard’s blog » Twitter and Breaking news
Helge: I agree. I've been following Robert Scoble
"There’s a lag of course, as journalists have to do some research, get some reports and distribute them. I did a search on the twitter search engine flaptor and here is a little taste of the content of those tweets," writes Richard.
Helge: Need to go back to watch for more news. "Flaptor" is a new thing for me.
