Are you a Citizen Journalist?: What comes to mind when you hear the phrase citizen journalist? Do you ·http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/...·

Are you a Citizen Journalist?

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase citizen journalist? Do you think of reporters on the evening news, or newspaper writers? Well you would be wrong.

Citizen journalist are everyday people who have not had any type of training. There are several ways a person can perform citizen journalism.

Many of these ways you are probably already doing.
Lets look at a few of the ways you might be doing citizen journalism.

Helge: I'm an emerging CJ. It has been a long road. Started as a ocaasional blogger and now being an occasional CJ. I writen now and then for HULIQ but plan to write more in the future. I've to climb over a few tresholds:
  1. Blogging is more personal
  2. A Citizen Journalist has to be more objective
  3. A CJ is a public service
  4. A blog is my owen thoughts

Creative Writing and Building a Production Team

Hello, we are looking for writers and photographers.

  • A good story needs visual elements.

  • Can we use cartoons?

  • Should we start a photo gallery?

  • Flickr could be used.

  • There are millions of possibilities.

  • How about video clips?

  • I'm figuring out how to produce great ideas and transform them to good stories.

  • The point of view is enhanced by creative writing.

Building Global Network of Citizen Journalists and Bloggers | Huliq

That's a goal. It might take some time. But we can manage it with a joint effort. The globe is getting smaller. It's true, we need to get down to the villages level to get NEW NEWS.

Building Global Network of Citizen Journalists and Bloggers | Huliq: "Building Global Network of Citizen Journalists and Bloggers Huliq, believing in the power of knowledge and sharing of information unveils a program to build a global network of volunteer journalists and bloggers who will report local news on any topic that is happening in a local setting.

Important events are always happening in small towns or tiny neighborhoods of big cities. However, how many times do we hear about them? Large media organizations may not be able to go to those corners and cover the news from those areas.

HULIQ.com wants to address this issue by inviting volunteer bloggers, journalists, students, teachers, professionals and active members of the public to take pride in building a citizen powered news network that will report news as it happens from their local corners.

Our goal is to have at least 150-200 active bloggers and news writers who would report long or short news stories regularly from their part of the world. We hope these writers and bloggers are evenly spread in the four corners of the world."

New features at Huliq

Armen Hareyan wrote to me 6:20 AM (3 hours ago) about new features on www.huliq.com . Huliq is a Citizen Journalist site. We've been working together for over a year. New features are added on a continuous basis. The newest being INSTANT NEWS.

Hi Helge,

How have you been? Please take a look at the new feature at huliq.com home page Instant news.

Thank you

armen

Helge: Nice to know. I've new things to write about. I've in the middle of a biotechnology business transformation process. I will write more in the near future. Collecting stuff to this blog. Have a nice week-end. I added an INSTANT NEWS about Mikkeli.
HULIQ Goes Mobile:
Report News From
Your Cell Phone

Mobile readers and cell phone users now can view the news stories from HULIQ.com via their mobile and hand-held devices.

Especially exiting is that Mobile users can not only read but also comment on the news stories as well as report short news stories through their cell phones.

Our friend Jeff did a great job in preparing the mobile version for HULIQ.

We are looking forward, as we only really support the modern handheld devices, in particular those that support the opera mini browser and that we have high hopes that in time there will be much better standards for mobile browsers.

Look forward to other new features such as the Instant News feature that another friend of HULIQ Dave Buchanan is building for us. This unique feature is coming up soon.

Good Morning Huliq

I'm on my way to Helsinki. We got snow to southern Finland yesterday. Had to change to winter tires this morning at 7 am. The weather isn't cold by Finnish standards: - 3 C. But it's an indication for winter on its way to our country.

Global warming is however an important issue. The climate has changed. We should have snow in the northern parts. But we don't.

Working out a plan

Visual Radio was on of my first blogs to get international attention. I wrote occasionally. Today I'm working with a channel strategy. How to manage several blogs and to differentiate the messages. It has taken me a year to get the channels idea organized.
  1. Objectives 100 writers on a global scale
  2. How long will it take?
  3. Four per month would mean 25 months
  4. Five per month means 20 months
  5. The geographical distribution of writers
  6. We need a global message
  7. We need much more traffic
  8. Blogging to find writers
This blog is quite new. I started to write Wisdom of the Crowd at the end of October 2007.

I'll use this WOC to express my personal opinions in English.

The Wisdom of The Crowd

Wikipedia: Citizen journalism, also known as public or participatory journalism, is the act of citizens "playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information," according to the seminal report We Media: How Audiences are Shaping the Future of News and Information, by Shayne Bowman and Chris Willis. They say, "The intent of this participation is to provide independent, reliable, accurate, wide-ranging and relevant information that a democracy requires."[1] Citizen journalism should not be confused with civic journalism, which is practiced by professional journalists. Citizen journalism is a specific form of citizen media as well as user generated content.

In a 2003 Online Journalism Review article, J. D. Lasica classifies media for citizen journalism into the following types: 1) Audience participation (such as user comments attached to news stories, personal blogs, photos or video footage captured from personal mobile cameras, or local news written by residents of a community), 2) Independent news and information Websites (Consumer Reports, the Drudge Report), 3) Full-fledged participatory news sites (OhmyNews), 4) Collaborative and contributory media sites (Slashdot, Kuro5hin), 5) Other kinds of "thin media." (mailing lists, email newsletters), and 6) Personal broadcasting sites (video broadcast sites such as (KenRadio).[2]

Dan Gillmor, former technology columnist with the San Jose Mercury News, is one of the foremost proponents of citizen journalism, and founded a nonprofit, the Center for Citizen Media, to help promote it. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's French-language television network has also organized a weekly public affairs program called, "5 sur 5", which has been organizing and promoting citizen-based journalism since 2001. On the program, viewers submit questions on a wide variety of topics, and they, accompanied by staff journalists, get to interview experts to obtain answers to their questions.
